Pilotage Services
St. John's pilotage is administered by the Atlantic Pilotage Authority (APA) pursuant to the Pilotage Act, Canada. The objectives of APA are to establish, operate, maintain, and administer a safe and efficient pilotage service within designated Canadian waters.
The Port of St. John's is a compulsory pilotage area. The basic tariff rates are as follows: Unit rate - $2.78; Basic charge and pilot boat charge $282.57; Minimum Movage - $202.57. In addition there are various supplementary and miscellaneous charges.
Pilots are dispatched through the Canadian Coast Guard, Vessel Traffic Centre, (VTSC) St. John's. Twelve hour advance notice should be sent through VTSC giving ship's ETA; departures and movages require four hour notice; in each case to be confirmed one hour beforehand.

The St. John's compulsory pilotage area consists of all the navigable waters of the Port of St. John's west of a line drawn from North Head to South Head and all the navigable waters seaward of that line within a radius of 2 nautical miles.
Harbour Master
All traffic movements and assignment of anchorages within the St. John's Port limits are under the jurisdiction of the Harbour Master, as outlined under current St. John's Port Authority operation regulations, policies and procedures, and SJPA Operating By-Law SJN-1.
Marine Charts and Publication Regulations
All vessels must have on board Charts, Sailing Directions, Tide and Current Tables, List of Lights, Buoys and Fog Signals, Radio Aids to Navigation, Annual Edition of Notices to Mariners, Code of Navigation Practices and Procedures, Catalogue of Nautical Charts and Related Publications. A vessel arriving in Canadian waters without the requisite Charts and Publications on board may obtain, upon arrival at the Pilot Boarding Station, appropriate package of charts, etc., by ordering in advance through the Pilot Station. |
