The Right Choice for the Energy Industry

For all the right reasons, St. John’s is the right port for the energy industry. Our sheltered, ice-free port is known industry-wide for its advanced infrastructure; modern distribution network; repair and maintenance facilities; berth capacity and laydown space; and storage capabilities for synthetic fluid, drilling mud, cement, chemicals, and bunkering. The Port is home to the largest and most modern supply base in Atlantic Canada and to one of only a handful of facilities that have the capability to construct and ship subsea equipment worldwide.

In 2003, the Port Authority completed construction of Pier 17, a 4,200 m2 state-of-the-art facility on the east side of the port. Today, it is one of the most adaptable and versatile petroleum support and service centres on the east coast of North America. It offers vastly increased lift capabilities, accessible in-deck utilidors, and the latest in environmental containment and safer systems.

The Port’s proximity to offshore resources is unmatched – a mere 350-kilometre corridor lies between the Grand Banks and "The Narrows", saving operators time and money. Local expertise and adaptability ensure all port users have the breadth and depth of service they require.

In 2005, Newfoundland and Labrador will be responsible for the production of almost 50 per cent of all of Canada’s conventional light crude oil. In fact, this province produces the equivalent of 60 per cent of deepwater oil production in the Gulf of Mexico currently from only two production platforms!

When international oil companies and supply and service firms look for the right place to conduct business, they look first to the Port of St. John’s.
