Once a fishing community... alway a fishing community
In 1497, when John Cabot discovered an abundance of fish just off our coast, the Port of St. John’s instantly became one of the most profitable fishing centres in the world. Today, the port’s modern infrastructure and enviable location continue to support an innovative, thriving, multi-species industry. The Port of St. John’s is, in fact, the largest fish-handling port in Newfoundland and Labrador, moving an average of more than 18.5 million pounds of fish every year. The port offers many advantages: a highly qualified labour force; proximity to fishing grounds (which provides for quick turnaround); access to a diverse supply and service community; and efficient discharge of landings for transportation to processing plants. |
