Business

The right plan in action - Developments & Projects.

The St. John’s Port Authority is a results-oriented agency. We think like a business and we act like a business. The investments we have made since introducing our $23 million Capital Investment Strategy in 2000 are now almost fully realized. They were delivered on time, on budget; and, today, they are in place and working for you. Future development will continue to support our pro-active mission of creating world-class, industry-driven infrastructure. The port’s potential continues to grow. So do our plans for its future.

ISPS Certification

On July 1, 2004, the Port of St. John’s reached an important milestone in its ongoing adherence to international security and trade regulations: it earned its International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code certification. This marked an important step in furthering international partnerships and activities.

Pier 17 Completion

The $10 million Pier 17 project was completed one full year ahead of schedule and has quickly evolved into the leading multi-purpose marine supply and service centre on Canada’s east coast. The Pier supports general marine usage and also meets the specific requirements of the energy industry. It provides vessels with safe, efficient, environmentally preferred means for on- and off-loading and transferring large volumes; and its wide-open design allows for maximum manoeuvrability of cargo.

Pier 7 Tourism Development

The Pier 7 project is the centrepiece of a $3.8 million investment in community and tourism development. It was completed in the spring of 2004 and has completely transformed the public face of the waterfront. This is a world-class setting for the general public and visitors alike: a truly urban gathering place on the waterfront of one of the oldest ports in North America. It is also a retail destination "par excellence". Currently local merchants are operating at the Pier selling arts and crafts, food, boat tours, and speciality items. The Keg Steakhouse & Bar at Pier 7 is the flagship of our hospitality centre and is already a landmark in the City of Legends.

Ro-Ro Ramp Construction

In the spring of 2005, the St. John’s Port Authority began construction on a second Ro/Ro (roll on/roll off) Ramp at Pier 2, west of the Main Terminal. The new ramp is designed to provide maximum operational efficiency for Oceanex’s fleet of existing and future vessels. The new ramp will facilitate improved loading and unloading of automobiles as well as trailers and containers using shunt trucks and forklifts. Operationally, it will be similar to the existing Ro-Ro Ramp located on the north side of the Oceanex pier, but with a two-lane traffic capability. This new addition to operations at the Main Terminal is completely industry-driven: it will translate into a much greater efficiency for clients looking to ship or receive cargo at the Port of St. John’s.
